I have been meaning to write a follow up to my original post about going no-poo awhile ago. There were a lot of awesome questions in the comments and I want to answer some questions and write about how it is going and what more I have learned. Spoiler! It is a lot!
I’ll start with the questions from last time:
Best for Windows and Glass Cleaning? Mama knows best… did your moms and grandmas clean with newspapers? Mine did! Vinegar in a spray bottle and then wiping with newspaper will give you sparkling windows and mirrors.
Making the vinegar smell less potent? You can add a squeeze of lemon juice to your cleaners or a TINY amount of tea tree oil and the smell will be infinitely better. But really, vinegar dissipates fast and takes nastiness with it so it is pretty worth it to just cope with the five minutes of gross (or clean and then leave the house) smell for clean everything.
BONUS: Tea Tree Oil is awesome for keeping bugs away (I use it on base boards and around doors to deter bugs from coming around, also tobacco water with lemon is a GREAT spider deterrent). Tea Tree Oil is also good for stimulating hair follicles and works to fight balding- you can add a tiny bit to your vinegar rinse in the shower and it will help with hair (husbands, take note!)
What about shaving? Ok, so up until just about a month ago I would just shave with water and then use a little coconut oil on my legs and underarms after my shower. But it sill kind of hurt when I did it. BUT now I use a salt or brown sugar scrub that has EVOO or Coconut Oil in it before I shave and THEN shave and it feels like it glides far better than ever before with soap and leaves me rash free and smooth.
Eye Burning from Baking Soda with Kiddos? This one is hard. Nolie hates having her hair washed. I don’t do it often (she is pretty much fine with just water and a scrub, and she still always smells like honey!) but when I do I just shield her eyes and lay her back and go quick. Most of the time I can avoid her eyes but every once in awhile I mess it up and she cries… it is lame but worth it I think.
NEW stuff I am doing…
Using Salt and Brown Sugar scrubs. I was lucky enough to be gifted with a couple of homemade scrubs this Christmas and was blown away. I can smell great, be all oiled up and use all household-inexpensive items?! Sign me up!
I blew through the gifts and here is my, very rudimentary, recipe for what I have been scrubbing with pre shave and all over my giant belly.
One Cup brown Sugar (or dead sea salt)
1/4 Cup melted coconut oil
3 tbs. boiling water
zest of two oranges and a little of the juice.
This takes a little stirring up each time I use it but I smell good, feel smooth and my belly is all smooth and oiled without having to do an extra step once I am out of the shower. No need to lotion your legs when you have just coconut oiled them! Side Note: ordering Coconut oil in bulk is a good way to save but also Trader Jo’s carries it now too.
For my face: I use baking soda and a tiny bit of honey and sometimes some oat meal too. This makes it smooth and clear. I will dip a cotton ball in Apple Cider Vinegar to use to clarify once a week or so.
I love that all of this is household stuff that won’t hurt you or your baby. It feels really great knowing that our home is shining because of a little elbow grease and natural products. It is also SO much cheaper and easier on the budget. Buying bulk vinegar, baking soda and apple cider vinegar is beyond inexpensive!
I think that is all… feel free to ask more questions or give me more awesome suggestions too!
