Our home is small and every room must do double (or triple!) duty. We decided to forgo using the largest space as our bedroom, or the girls’, and instead made it a community space. It is my office, our workout room, yoga room, cozy reading nook (one of a few of those!), and space for big movement! Today I wanted to share the movement and cozy portion of our space. Another day I’ll share my (standing) desk space too.
Our girls are very active and we want to encourage that! Having clear spaces opens us up to more free play and big dance parties, some things that we’re all pretty fond of! It’s also great because Charlie and I can both lay out mats and practice yoga, or do a sweaty HIIT workout in here and not feel like we are jumping all over each other.
We have a pull up bar installed in the door frame (a tiny one Charlie fashioned, that isn’t obtrusive) and the hook-up for a swing for the girls. We cycle through toys and currently the swing is in storage, but will come back out to play again soon. I keep a hook on the wall so it can get tucked back whenever it isn’t in use.
My weight set is from Costco ($200! I got mine in January, and they will likely have it again this year!). My mat’s are all hand-me-down’s save for one beauty from Gaiam that Charlie got me for my birthday. And my blocks are all made by a certain sweet woodworker that I have on retainer.
There are still lots of things I’d like to change in this room, and have big plans for it in the next couple of months. But I wanted to document it as it is now, because it’s functional, fun, and serves our family really well. I can’t recommend enough how much getting rid of furniture has benefited all of us! More space, more play, more connecting, and more activity – Win/Win/Win/(win!)!
