Each day gives doable, cheap/free ideas that don’t depend on a lot of time, space, or money.
Also, many people following along are sharing their own methods of self care under the hashtag #selfcarestory and it’s bringing me endless joy and inspiration!
Every Day in July I’ll be sharing a small self care tip/idea. I’d love to see your posts if you follow along on some/any of them, and hear about your self care practice. The idea being that there are as many ways to care for yourself as their are people in the world. Growing your list of ideas is beneficial, and makes accessing self-care on a daily basis more available. If you decide to join along use the #selfcarestory so we can all encourage each other. JULY ONE: Today’s tip is simple. Prioritize a snuggle. This can be with yourself, esp if you are feeling over touched, grab a blanket and hug yourself tight. It can be a long hug from a friend or your partner and you connecting more thoughtfully. Or an intention and cozy moment with your Kiddo. Whatever it is that suits you and your needs best (sometimes it’s best to wrap your own arms tight around you in a shower, and breath), find space for that closeness.
JULY TWO: This self care is one for your brain. Today, or soon, learn something new. This could be working on a dance move, crawling like your baby does, googling something you’ve been wondering about (I’ll offer some ideas!), listen to a new podcast, try an inversion. Do something to make a new neural connection, and strengthen your brain as a means of caring for yourself. I spend a lot of time on the same thoughts. It’s deep self care and medicine to inject my brain with brand new connections! A functional neuron will fire 5-50 times a second, and creating new neuron connections will grow its capacity, awaken new pathways, and help your brain! Today I’m working on a new to me headstand (arms extended, palms up! Eeek!). And here are some fun ideas of things to google; What is the connection between gut health and serotonin production? Can your brain physically grow? Where and how? Whatever you learn, I’d love to learn/gear about it too! JULY THREE: This self care is rooted in getting thoughts that bang around your brain, taking up energy and space, OUT. Write down whatever you’re ready to let go of. Then do what you will with it; save it to reflect on, burn or tear it up, or just lose it till a day you need to find it. After you’re done write a list of what you’d like to bring into your life. Not necessarily goals/ambitions but anything. It could be more love, grace, or space. Or it could be specific and detailed. Your lists can be short, one thing. Or pages of catharsis. As always, this isn’t dogmatic. It can be in a note on your phone dictated in traffic, or while you nurse your baby. It can be art journaled and water colored, or scribbled and burned while you make your family dinner. Electronic, paint, crayon, or pen, there is no wrong way to process. Journal. Or care. I’d love to hear/see your experiences with any of these prompts. Use #selfcarestory so we can connect, or DM me if you want/if you have a private account ❤️
JULY FOUR: A bit of movement. Today’s self care idea will feel familiar, we see it everywhere. But before you relegate it to guilty notions of, “I’m not doing enough” or “it’s too much right now”, “I can’t do a whole workout!” Do the best thing you can for yourself in a hard moment; Lower Your Expectations. Movement can be a juicy stretch, arms up and pushing the sky with the biggest breath you’ve taken all day. It can be a dance party to one song with your family, or alone. It could be a slow reach down to your toes with a deep breath to fill your back up wide. Or? Could be a long run, sweaty workout, or intense flow. Moving your body will change your hormones, produce some measure of endorphins, and break up the sticky feeling in your joints that most people wake with. This #selfcarestory will look different in shape, intensity, and movement for everyone. Embrace what will make you reconnect with your body, breath, and maybe your sweat. #selfcareisessential
JULY FIFTH: Today’s self care is a thought. A moment you find when the world spins fast and you feel slow. Close your eyes, breath a deep deep belly breath, and lean into a thought. It may happen once today, maybe you only remember to try it right now. Maybe it’s ten times today. Or fifty. Some ideas; • I am enough for today. • I am capable of what I need to do. • I can reframe. I can rethink. • Today I say no. • Today I say yes. • I can take a moment to calm down. • I’m strong enough. And, many, many more, whatever you think of that resonates for you. A mantra, thought, prayer, affirmation. Choose yours, and when you think it breath really deeply. Repeat it till your heart feels steady. If you can, close your eyes. You’re worth a moment, and positive thoughts, a refilling breath, and love. #selfcarestory #seattle #bodypositivemovement #effyourbodystandards #everybodyisagoodbody #boposelfie #mybody #becauseitsmybody #motherhood #selfcare #selfcareisessential #Radicalselfcare #bodypositivefitness
JULY SIX: Sometimes self care is premeptive. Today I’m encouraging you to plan something you can look forward to. This might be a Friday night bath, or a Saturday morning run, maybe a date with a hot cup of tea, or if possible book that massage, therapist appointment, or even a getaway. I’ve stacked my summer with short, fulfilling, vacations for the first time in my adult life. And having these (mostly) camping trips to look forward to has bolstered my heart and brain in important ways. What can you plan for today that will be fun to anticipate and also fill you up when it happens? #selfcarestory Also? If you camp, these quick-set-up tents from @colemanusa are a fricken win. We snagged ours at Costco and I highly recommend it (not sponsored, I wish 😂).
JULY SEVEN: Ask for help; ask to borrow, ask to be heard, ask to be hugged, ask to be alone, ask for company. The kayak above belongs to a friend. And I asked ” Hey, can I take it out?” on one of our beach nights. It felt hard to ask to borrow, it felt too big, too nice. But what’s did she say? “Yeah, of course!” And that few minutes out paddling was calm, amazing, and filled me up I a way I didn’t have access to otherwise. What can you ask for help, support, love, time, with today? Guaranteed, your friends want to help you ❤️#selfcarestory
JULY EIGHT; Thank You. It’s easy to forget how much you do. How much you do for you. Your family. Your partner. Your body. Your brain. Yourself. In a deep breath do some thank you, to you. Thank you for learning to think gentle thoughts. Thank you for caring for your children with so much love and care. Thank you for thinking of others and their needs. Thank you for moving this body. Thank you. It’s easy for me to want my husband and kids to thank me, it’s hard to remember that I can and need to do that too. This morning I spent time breathing deep and being thankful not only for what I have, but what I do and have purposely cultivated. For a moment it felt too selfish, congratulatory, or boastful. Till I realized how deep I felt and needed it. Give it a try. #selfcarestory Also, photo by my incredibly talented sister; @st.selbyveraicon • • • • #selfcareisessential #yogaformama #autumnonthemat #yogaeverydamnday #ytt #everybodybends #yogaforeverybody #bopofitness #sweatpink
JULY NINE: Be cliché! Bubble baths? Lotion? A run? A glass of wine? Do any of the “self care”, self cares really resonate for you? If so, embrace that! Soak in the bath, watch a dumb show, do the workout, enjoy the chocolate. Often clichés are there for a reason. It’s ok to enjoy and love them. I’d love to know the clichés of self care that really work for you! #selfcarestory • • • #selfcareisessential #yogainthewild #radicalselfcare #sanddunes #oregondunes #optoutside #yogaformama #autumnonthemat #yogaeverydamnday #ytt #everybodybends #yogaforeverybody #bopofitness #sweatpink
JULY TEN: Stillness. Mediation is shown to have immense benefits again and again. There are countless wonderful guided meditation podcasts, apps, and YouTube videos (if you have a favorite please pop it in the comments to help us all out)! My favorite technique is this; Come into a comfortable space in your body. Eyes closed, begin to breath, count down from 50. Breath deep, focus on a 8:8 breath, and allow yourself time. Be permeable to your thoughts, come and go, be still. #selfcarestory • • • • #selfcareisessential #sanddunes #innerwork #radicalselfcare #eightlimbs
