I have vivid memories of friends Mom’s having those plastic bags of hot oil. Warmed them up in a microwave, or in hot water on the stove top, and then squirting yellow oil all over your hair. It always looked a little bizarre to my 8 year old brain, but it stuck with me none the less. Now I’m an avid warm oil self-massage lover, and oil treat my hair now and again. So the marriage of hot oil, oil treatment, and a new way to feel some calm and pampering all with stuff I regularly have in my pantry. It just makes sense. So, my hot oil treatment, grocery store V05 knockoff was born. And it was good. Adorable cat accomplice not necessary but highly recommended.
This recipe is easy to tweak, aquick to make, and versatile. This is my version, but feel free to switch up the essential oil to any that you know smells/feels best to you, or that matches the time of day that you plan to put your mask in. I’m an early afternoon/ morning hair mask lover because then I can leave it on for 8+ hours. But you’d get benefits even from an hour. So tailor the essential oil to what you want to feel.
Hot Oil Hair Mask Recipe
1/4 cup coconut oil
1 Tbs argan oil
4 drops essential oil (I used orange this time, but plan to use lavender next time!)
Warm all three ingredients on the stove till coconut oil is fully melted and all are combined. Pour into a small dish and allow it to cool to a hot (but not burning) temperature. Test with your finger tips.
Apply to the ends of your hair with finger tips, gradually working up from the tips (your roots are more naturally oily and need less). Once you’ve put on all you’d like (the rest makes a really wonderful body oil!) pile your hair on your head or into a shower cap and give it at least an hour, preferably more, before washing out. This recipe will likely make more than you need, I like to use the extra as a massage oil, or in the shower for cleansing.
To wash out oil treatment you’ll likely want to use shampoo, suds well, and wait to rinse at least a few minutes. You may want to wash twice depending on your hair texture.
