I wanted to put the prompts here, so if you are wanting to work your way through this self-care reset down the road, the option is available! I highly recommend writing down your answers, spending a little time on it (shouldn’t take more than 5-10min if you don’t want it to!) and allow yourself the space to write down whatever comes up, trusting that when you read back it’ll resonate for you.
Knowing Why you self care is important. There are all the obvious and catch phrase reasons (you deserve it! you work hard! treat yourself!) but WHY do you need it. Once that why get’s really solid, it’s far easier to prioritize, honor, and understand what will serve you better as true deep care.
I listened to a podcast recenetly about Yoga as radical self care. In it the host mentioned that when she asks her yoga students to set an intention she has them add “so that I may be of service” to the end of it. I think this can apply, in part, to self care. Our why is bigger than feeling good. It’s to serve our true hearts, families, community, and world more. That adage of ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’ is the crux, being filled up isn’t just to create a full feeling, but to create the space and ability to DO big things!
For example; “Because I am tired.” May also translate into; Because I am too tired to have anything to give my family. I want to be able to give more to my kids, and partner.
Or; Because I am fed up! Tired of it all! May also mean; Because I don’t know who I am anymore, what I like, or what fills me up. I want to feel like a whole person again. I want energy for causes that are important to me.
Ect. Ect. If you want help with this, post what your knee-jerk why feels like, and we can all work to help figure out the big-deep-why that may motivate that!
Once you know you Why you can use that to help guide if what you’re attempting will bring you closer to feeling cared for, or further away.
Caveat: Many MANY of us are of service to others a LOT and all day long. What I am working to get to with this prompt isn’t to instill a deeper feeling of needing to serve others. Instead I want you to feel empowered and energetic in the way’s that you already serve or want to serve. If your need for this month is “I don’t even know WTF self care is??” then your why may be “getting to know what I like” and that + “so I may serve better” needs to have NO place in this 30 days, it’ll come later.
Create a physical list of things you enjoy, that you can put somewhere visible, or, in a journal that you can add to. No need to frame it as self care, just get pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard!) to list out some things that you enjoy doing. Don’t worry about really doing this “right”, there aren’t wrong answers here. You will cureate the list later, this is just to help you start thinking in a new way. Your list can look cliche or not, expensive or free, but get some things down that you enjoy and try to make it varied. Even if some seem unattainable. Work on having at least 10 on there. Here are some of mine, maybe they’ll help you get started!
